Old Gow gave Lillie a long stare. “Very odd indeed.” And with that he wandered off to inspect a weed growing at the side of the road.

Ezmeralda Tyke slumped down under the window through which she had been watching the mother put her child to bed.

“But we didn't steal her!” she sighed.

“We did steal her.” mumbled Hogart. The big oaf was sitting toying with a beetle that had crawled up his boot. “We stealed her 'cos Malink told us to, for that Leech Lady.”

“Well yeah, we did. But then we saved her - saved her from whatever the Leech Lady was going to do to her!”

Suddenly a small ragged girl skittered round the corner of the cottage, skidding to a halt in front of them.

“Are you coming?” she gasped, grinning widely. “We got the cellar door open and Kittlewick found the biggest cheese!”

Hogart lumbered to his feet and ran off excitedly with the girl.

Ezmeralda Tyke of the Malinquents

Ezmeralda Tyke is a diminutive, elf-like creature, infamous across the land for the alleged abduction of one Lillie Poots, age 9.

So here is the first of my fantasy offerings. As you can see she measures approximately 20mm to the top of her head as posed, so she's a pretty small elf. If indeed she is an elf. I deliberately didn't make her too pretty, as I wanted something slightly unsettling about her face, though I still think she's a little cutie. Don't tell her that to her face!

I'm planning a four figure adventuring party, along with Lillie Poots herself. It might take a while for Ezmeralda to go on sale in metal as I'd like to release the Malinquents as a set, though she'll likely be available in resin before that.

Entering a fantasy world...

Well, Christmas and New Year (as well as a 'significant number' birthday) have been and gone and while it wasn't the most productive of festive periods, I do feel refreshed and have been really enjoying sculpting lately. I'm quite excited about some figures that are a bit different from the current Statuesque Miniatures line up.

For a while, I've had the urge to sculpt some fantasy figures but until now I hadn't been able to pin down quite what angle I was going to take. The sci-fi figures I do are fairly generic, though hopefully with a little twist or a nice pose to keep things interesting, and I find it easy to come up with ideas for that kind of figure. I guess I could do a similar thing for fantasy, making generic figures (most probably female and sexy...) in various styles of fantasy outfit, but to be honest I'm not really sufficiently interested in or knowledgeable of fantasy/historical armour and clothing to pull that off. Tre Manor of Red Box Games is for me the master of this type of figure and has created a brilliant range of figures. He's clearly know his stuff when it comes to the fantasy genre and I know I don't have the knowledge to do something similar. Plus, why would I try to compete when he's created such a comprehensive range?

No, I need to find my own way in the fantasy world. Part of my ugre to create some fantasy characters is a desire to sculpt some weirder and more unusual figures; scary monsters and gribbly creatures that are a world away from my sci-fi girls. Jody Siegel's amazing Imbrian Arts goblins and Dave King's rather joyful Bederken figures have captured my attention, as well as various 'old school' Citadel Miniatures blogs that showcase the charms of the often eccentric but always characterful nature of many older figures. I've also been pouring over artwork from the likes of John Bauer and Brian Froud, surely sources inspiration for many of the figures I've been admiring.

One thing that has been impressed on me is the story telling aspect of much of what I've mentioned above. While I do indeed have an elaborate, overarching story behind my sci-fi range (though it's all a bit shoehorned in...) it's not really necessary for me to convey that. Sexy girls with guns will be popular regardless of what history I have invented for them!

For my fantasy range, I really want a story to hang everything on from the beginning and I've had fun trying to create what is essentially a fairytale told through miniatures and various vague and cryptic passages of text. Through this, I hope the rather disparate range of figures I have planned will work together as a whole and allow the customer to invest some imagination in them beyond what the figure immediately portrays. The theme I have chosen to work around is the classic 'girl lost in a fantasy land' à la Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Labyrinth and much more. So, sure it's not original but there nothing wrong with an archetype!

I think that's it- everything I've done since I first started sculpting in May 2007. 16 males and 46 females. In future I might try and broaden my scope a bit; I've got a hankering to sculpt some gribbly monsters and the like, but I do enjoy sculpting a nice female figure!

Favourites of the lot? Agatha Fox, May Killan (she'll always be Amy to me) and Poppy Come-Lately. :)

Tilly Tumbleworth

Yeah, I think we'd had a couple when we came up with that name...

Anyway, this is the original sculpture of Tilly Tumbleworth, Kill-Team member and next release from Statuesque Miniatures.

The final product will have small detail changes, namely a strap of pouches around her left arm and a peg on her foot instead of a base tab. She measures 30mm tall and would be 32mm tall unposed.

A very limited number of resin casts of Tilly and (finally) Poppy will go on sale on Monday, with the full metal release to follow. Both are with the mould maker and caster and are also being painted.

She's sculpted, as usual, from Fimo and Milliput. Unposed she'd stand 33mm tall. I designed her to be cast in 2 parts but I'm pleased that I managed to keep the figure quite '3D'; lots of diverging line to add interest.

I've finally got this figure finished after she's been sitting on my shelf for months.

She's sculpted from Fimo and Milliput and unposed would measure about 33mm tall. It took a while, due to that nature of the pose and simply being able to reach certain parts but I'm really happy with how she turned out. I really tried to push myself with this one and create something dynamic and interesting, whilst still being relatively simple for the customer to assemble. It will hopefully be a 3 part figure (body, left arm, base piece) so there won't be any pinning of spindly arms required!

Wow, it's been a while since I've had anything to put up here! It has been far from the most productive of months in regards to sculpting, especially with the disruption of moving.

So what have I been up to? Well, I completed a couple of slightly larger figures as a commission that is still currently 'Top Secret'. I'm really pleased with how they turned out. I have a figure nearly completed for Statuesque that is way more dynamic than anything I've done previously and I've started work what I think is going to be an exciting series of rather unusual figures. I'll give more info on those when they're ready but I'm really hoping to up the release rate for Statuesque so keep your eyes peeled.

In the meantime, I just completed this little lady for a private client. She is a companion piece for the Lady in Red I did a few month ago. She measures 30mm tall. She's a simple little figure, nothing fancy, a little shorter and differently proportioned to what I prefer to work to for my personal stuff but I think she turned out nicely.

Here's a figures I finished recently for Crooked Dice Games, Group Captain Jim:

Now, I'm actually really happy with this figure, but it was a total pain in the ass to photograph. Various elements of the design and posing have conspired to make his legs look a bit short in the photos. I honestly believe it looks fine in person, as do Graeme and Karl of Crooked Dice. I think I managed to get quite a dynamic pose for a single piece casting so it's a bit annoying that he looks kind of odd in the photos. Even with multiple angles, you don't get read a figure the same from a photo as you would seeing it in reality.

Anyway, I'm always going to sculpt what looks good in person, rather than stick to something that will photograph well. So there.

Oh yeah, this was my fiftieth figure I mentioned a few posts back!

Attack of the Killer Sexbots!

Finished these girls for Crooked Dice over the weekend. Karl and Graeme of CD asked for a curvier, chunkier style for these figures, which I complimented with more simple detailing than usual. They were good fun, especially the roboface, but I feel the need to sculpt something tall, slender and leggy now!

As you can see, the heads were made separate to allow the customer to swap them between the figures. They measure about 28mm to the eyes.

By the way, these aren't the 50th figure I posted about previously. That figure is still hush, hush...

Hawaii Five-Oh

I just completed my fiftieth figure. Does that count as a milestone? Not sure, it perhaps just highlights how unproductive I have been.

I think I first attempted to sculpt a full figure around May 2007. Before that I'd mainly used Green Stuff to make furry Russian hats- don't ask. After a couple of dodgy attempts I completed my first figure towards the end of 2007, the Pistol Pixie for the Frothers Sculpting Competition. There have been a handful of uncompleted figures along the way, but really not that many considering my ever changing artistic whimsy.

My first commission, for Otherworld Miniatures, represented my fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth completed figures. This was perhaps too early to take on paid work, but I'd like to think the challenge pushed me and broadened my range. That being said, only fourteen of the fifty have been male figures and only six have been human males; it would seem I have a niche. All figures, bar two, have either been sold or put into some form of production which sounds nicely profitable for me; believe me, my bank balance says otherwise!

So, yeah, fifty figures in coming up to 4 years... better start working a bit harder!

Here are the final two witches I did for Lead Adventure Miniatures. There were lots of interesting little details to sculpt on all these figures, such as the raven with a monocle, the voodoo doll and the dead rabbit, so I'm looking forward to seeing painted versions to bring out the detail. Here's my entry for the Frothers Unite 2010 Scupting Competition. The theme this year was 'Cthluedo'. As I know very little about the cthulhu mythos I decided to do a slightly warped take on a Cluedo style character.

Hello, just finished this one. She's for a private client and will not be for sale. She measures29mm to the eyes. I've fixed her right buttock since taking these photos; it's now much more peachy.

In other news, the definitive masters for the launch figures of Statuesque Miniatures went back to the mouldmakers yesterday, so hopefully it shouldn't take too long to get the production moulds made. Apologies for the delay to anyone who's been waiting for them, but I wanted to get everything spot on before I released the figures.

The initial release will be of four figures- Havana Gray, Kitzie Rama, Mei-Lin Mayfair and Bella the Partisan. Each one gives a flavour of the different directions in which I want to take the line. Though there will be some gents too...

Just completed this figure for the Frother's Charity Thingy being organised by Jon Atter AKA Dags. This is Sabrina of Charlie's Angels, to go with Kelly sculpted by Sebastian Archer and Jill by Kev White. I, for one, cannot wait to see Farrah Fawcett sculpted by Kev White! Apparently there are still a few sets left; how to get them you can find in the Frothers link.

A rather fine sum of money has been raised so far for Cancer Research and the MS Society. Jolly good show everyone! :)

Here's one I've just finished for my personal range Statuesque Miniatures. It'll be a wee while before she's available but I'm impatient and wanted to share her because I'm rather chuffed with how she turned out! She's something of a remake of Lila. She was my 10th sculpt while this is my 35th so it's nice for me to see the progression.

Biker Girls!

These girls were done a couple of months ago for Antenociti's Workshop's GOT range.

Great fun to work on these and Jed at AW did a great job designing the hoverbikes. I deliberately sculpted these girls in a vaguely 'manga' style, following on from my Mei-Lin sculpt. The style just seemed to suit the character of these figures.

What the hell have I been doing?!

A question I ask myself quite a lot really. Productivity at low due to general life chaos. But last week I got stuck in to sculpting in order to try out polymer clay. And things came together rather quickly really! :) Tried a bit of Fimo but this figure is actually done in Cernit after Tre Manor raved about it on Frothers. Bit of a bugger to photograph due to the dark clay, the slight translucency and its tendecy to attract dust. The gun looks a bit of a mess as I really should have sculpted it in epoxy putty so had to tidy things up with milliput, but it'll look fine in metal anyway.

Oh, and this is a sneak preview of one of the release figures for my secret project!

I posted this over at www.minisculpture.co.uk and thought I'd post it here too as a bit of an update.

These are my most commonly used tools, some bought and some home made (never throw away old paint brushes).

So, working left to right...

A Royal Sovereign clay shaper, Flat chisel size 0 extra firm. Could do nothing without this little tool. After the putty is on and roughly shaped, I'll use this for smoothing, shaping, more smoothing, more shaping. Indispensible for me.

Another RS colour shaper, this one was bought from heresy miniatures. Often use this for eye sockets, not used so much but very useful when the situation is right. Still on the look out for a very sharply pointed clay shaper so if anyone knows where to pick one up let me know!

My basic shaping tool, bought from heresy again (can't say I use the rest much...). I use it for rough shaping the putty when it goes on to the figure. Slightly rounded on the other surface so good for smoothing/ blending.

I made this from a bit of brass wire (just using pliers, files and sand paper so not too tricky). Stuck in an old paint brush. Was aiming for a finer version of the tool described above and thats what I got . Very useful for sharpening up those details.

Next up are a couple of needles, both bluntened slightly. I use the thicker needle more, generally using the fine needle when the putty is fairly cured. Should probably get myself an unblunted needle too for extra fine details...

A dental tool, bought off ebay. Not great quality, but useful for awkward angles of attack and for the likes of folds in robes.

A fine loop of 0.6mm copper wire. Again useful occassionally for folds, eye sockets etc.

Finally, files and a sharp scalpel, because to be honest I do a lot of scraping (which is why I used to sculpt in a GS/BS mix). Shapely long legs generally don't appear just like that so a fair bit of fine tuning is required! Don't be shy about this, it's all to get the final product after all.

Anyways, I'm hoping some other sculptors on the forum will post pics of their tools so I can pick up some tips!

Here is the completed commission of little people for Otherworld Miniatures. All very, very small. As I said before they are inspired by artwork from the 1st and 2nd edition AD&D Monster Manuals.

Brownie: 13mm to eye level.

Pixie: 16mm to eye level if standing, 19mm as posed.

Sprite: 15mm to eye level.

Brownie: 14.5mm to eye level.

Here's a little preview of the commission I'm doing for Otherworld Miniatures at the moment. It's a leprechaun, inspired by the artwork from the 1st and 2nd edition D&D Monster Manuals. He'll come in a pack with a sprite, pixie and brownie that I'm also working on. He's pretty much done here, just a couple of alterations here and there. He's also pretty damn tiny, 15mm to the eyes.

Finally I've got something I can post on my blog! The commission prior to this is still underwraps by the client, plus life has been incredibly hectic the last couple of months, hence why it has taken til now to get something posted. Looks like things should settle down soon (but that's what I said in my last blog entry..).

Anyway, these two figures are for the new Antenociti's Workshop range of sci-fi figures. Both are technicians rather than frontline troops, and are armed with 'viral rifles' that fire viral nanobots. Apparently. :) The female is also a 'hacker' so imagine her accessing a holographic display with her outstreched arm. Both figures would be 32mm to the eye if they were standing.

As of tomorrow I shall be upping sticks and leaving this windswept isle for life in the big city. Hopefully, once things settle down, this should mean a lot more sculpting time. And perhaps I'll be able to work on some of my longstanding WIPs while putty is drying on commission pieces. So many ideas, so little time...

Just a quick update. Dagenhameast has been busy getting the generous miniature painters of the world to paint up Charity for an upcomming charity auction. So far, both Ángel Giráldez http://www.frothersunite.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=22936 and Marike Reimer http://www.frothersunite.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=22886 have shown their take on her. And I think they both did a fantastic job, I'm really chuffed. :) I'm sure lots of money will be raised with the auction.

Over on Frothers, members Dagenhameast and Artemis Black recently ran several auctions to raise money for the Cancer Research UK Race For Life charity. This figure, which will be limited to 100 copies, was done as a gift for those who either donated something for the auction or sponsored the girls running the race. Lots of money raised so far I believe- Good work all!

I'm very fond of these figures, each features some of my favourite things- girls, spies, long boots and coats, with hotpants thrown in for good measure! Each figure is about 26-28mm to eye level.

Lila will be redone soon with a new weapon (probably a Sten gun) and remodeled to hold it in a less awkward way.

Early Work- Halflings

After my first two sculpts, I decided to work on some halflings in order to concentrate on clothing and detail and to not get bogged down with human anatomy and proportions. This little wench was the first result of that and was sold to a small company in Australia. The rest of the little guys then followed her there and should all be available soon. If you can't wait, head over to frothersunite.com and hunt down the member 'Lupus', who should be able to sort you out. ;)

Each of these little guys is between 15 and 18mm tall.

My first figures! The Selkie and the Pixie with a Pistol were done for the 2007 Frothers Unite sculpting competition. The theme was 'the Unseelie Suspects'. I was rather chuffed that the Pixie made joint 3rd in her category. The Pixie was sold and may eventually be produced, but the Selkie was unceremoniously torn apart in order to make changes that were never completed. I think I just wanted to re-use the rather fine bum...
